Built in 1934, this is the most famous, most loved hotel in the city and is regarded as one of the finest hotels in Asia. The 24 king palms leading up to the entrance were part of the city plan for New Delhi. Frequented by Gandhi, Nehru, Jinnah and Mountbatten, the Imperial continues to host many visiting dignitaries. Recent guests have included heads of state, royalty and global celebrities.
The restaurants and bars are acclaimed and the spa one of the best in the city with a superb outdoor pool. Of the 192 rooms and 43 suites, the Royal Imperial Suite is breathtaking and the Lutyens Suite has a lovely four-poster bed. If your budget is not quite in that league, opt for a room in the northwest or southwest wings for peace and quiet. The Art Deco wing is particularly good and room 349 has a pretty view over the new pool. Avoid the inward facing Heritage Suites, which lack natural light. Ask for one of the six outward facing Heritage Suites. Best are 131, 231 & 331. Rooms begin at 17,500 plus tax.
