Maniharon ka Rasta is the churi (bangle) lane in the old city, just off Tripolia Bazaar, and is open Mon to Sat 11am-9pm, Sun 11am-4pm. The traditional lac bangles, made from resin produced by the female lac insect, are heated on braziers and custom fitted. They start at 12 and go up to 400 per piece. You can also design your own, choosing from a dazzling array of colours, patterns, mirror pieces, stones and beads. My favourite stores on this lane are Ma Bangles at shop 125 and Naaz Bangles at 133. I also was impressed with this store:
129 Maniharon ka Rasta (off Tripolia Bazaar). Ph: (0141) 505 2164, Shabad Mob: 93141 42164.
This family has been making bangles here for seven generations and has supplied bangles to the Jaipur Royal Family. They are also proud winners of many prestigious national craft awards. Ayaz’s brother, Avaz, across the lane at shop 54, was wonderful to chat with and showed me a letter from Maharani Gayatri Devi, written in 1986, confirming that seven generations of the family had supplied the palace household.
