Antique Brass Chapatti Container

$175.00

Dimensions: 30cm diameter, 15cm high.
Code: METAL 0121

Engraved, tinned brass chapatti (unleavened flatbread) box with copper rivets. This impressive box would have been used to store and serve chapattis. Late 19th to early 20th century from Gujarat/Rajasthan. Hand-beaten (the marks of which can be seen inside) with beautiful fine engraving on the lid. Under the central handle is a raised flower design, which is encircled by repeating engraved palmettes. Intricate floral and geometric bands (including a herringbone design) radiate out from this and are broken up by a plain band. Even the underside copper pin to hold the handle has a floral decoration. Traditionally copper and brass vessels were used in India for cooking and serving food. They can, however, react with acidic foods causing toxins so the pots would be tinned (as this one has been) to prevent this. This may, of course, be used to keep your chapattis warm however, it would also make a lovely jewellery box or simply a gorgeous object for your home.
