Cast brass seated Nandi from north Karnataka or Maharashtra with lovely patina. Late 18th to early 19th century. Nandi, which means ‘giving delight’ or ‘giving joy’, is the sacred bull of the Hindu god Shiva. Nandi is Shiva’s vahanna (vehicle) and his most ardent worshipper. All over India, temples dedicated to Shiva generally have a seated Nandi displayed at the entrance, facing the main shrine where the Shiva Linga is housed. It is believed, particularly in South India, if you whisper your wishes to Nandi’s ears, he will convey them to Shiva. In this piece, Nandi is seated, with his left foot raised, which is very auspicious. He is also decorated with a bell neck ornament.
