A beautiful, repousse, handmade, copper plate from the 19th century. Probably made in North India. Traditionally copper and brass vessels were used for cooking and serving food. They can, however, react with acidic foods causing toxins so the plates would be tinned on the inside (as here) to prevent this. The tinning has mostly worn away with use on this plate which has a large etched flower design, with smaller floral designs around the rim. Great for the kitchen, as a wall display, or perhaps to hold shimmering candles.
