A gorgeous hand-crafted traditional choktse from the Himalayan desert region of Ladakh in north India. These low rectangular tables are used for dining and this one was in use at a remote village tearoom and it was not a simple object to travel with! This vibrant hand-painted table has a superb floral design on the front panel and the side panels are decorated with clouds.

Ladakh, like its neighbour Tibet, is a high-altitude desert and is very cold and dry. The breath-taking (literally) landscape is monochromatic and austere which may explain why the local people love colour on their homes and clothing. Ladakh’s many monasteries are brilliant examples of the skills of the painters, who use a rich palette and follow a traditional code of colours, which use specific motifs, patterns and symbols. These tables are often painted in layers to build colour tones and the intensity of colour.
