A gorgeous, soft gold, mashru fabric embellished with a small, repeating, colourful diamond pattern. It was bought from a specialist textile dealer in Ahmedabad. Mashru is an Arabic word and is the term used for a special mixed fabric woven with a silk warp and a cotton weft. Muslim men who were prohibited to wear pure silk fabric against their body traditionally wore this textile. The silk yarns are on the outer side and the cotton on the inner side. The silk weave provides a luxurious sheen. Today only a few families in the village of Patan, North Gujarat (about three hours north of Ahmedabad) continue to weave this traditional textile.
