Antique Wooden Jewellery Box
Dimensions: 18cm wide, 14cm high, 14cm deep.
Code: WOOD 0521
Late 18th to early 19th century, hand-carved, wooden box from the coastal state of Kerala in South India. This jackwood box is carved out of single piece of wood with no joints. The top of the lid is carved with two large flowers. These are surrounded by several rectangles of carved geometric designs. The sides of the box are decorated with a central band of repeating lines, sandwiched by two smaller bands of delicate triangle designs. Both these echo the designs on the lid giving the piece a cohesive aesthetic. This box would have been used for storage, perhaps of something precious to the owner. It is a gorgeous object.
