Antique Wooden Jewellery Box

This early 19th century, hand-carved, wooden box with iron fittings and chain is from the coastal state of Kerala in South India. These boxes were traditionally used to keep valuables in and would have been hung from the ceiling by the iron hook. This jackwood box is beautifully carved, on the dome shaped lid and on all four sides, with geometric, scrollwork and floral designs. The inside of the box shows the mark of the tools where the hollow has been carved out of one solid piece of wood. It is a rare and beautiful piece.
