Bought in Kolkata, these ‘Pati Bet’ boxes are sturdy, light and resilient, avoiding moisture and mould. The botanical name of the plant is Schumannianthus dichotoma and in Bengali is known as the Pati Bet. It has a lovely white flower but is cultivated for its stem used mainly in the weaving of mats. These dala pati boxes are woven by artisans in West Bengal and are beautiful just as an object but are also very useful as storage containers. The smaller box fits perfectly into the larger one for shipping.
