A pretty hand-woven bowl shaped basket from the coastal state of Goa, India. The natural reeds have been dyed a beautiful terracotta red and stitched with yellow thread around the sides and red thread at the base to create the design. The Mahar community was once famous in Goa for its bamboo craft and was relied on by the fisherman who used the baskets for their catch, other traders who stored grain and transported chickens in baskets, and the wider community who used the mats, fans and trays. Today there are just a few of these artisans left who practice this traditional craft.
