Payer flags are ubiquitous throughout the Himalaya. The coloured flags are hand block printed with prayers, mantras and images of deities. Buddhists believe that the prayers are carried by the wind and spread goodwill and positive energy. This set of flags was hand-made by artisans in the Dekyling Tibetan community located near the city of Dehradun, Uttarakhand in the foothills of the Indian Himalaya. These flags have prayers surrounding a central image of lungta, a Windhorse. Lungta is also the Tibetan word for 'prayer flag'.
The vibrant flags are always arranged in colour order from left to right: blue, white, red, green, yellow. Blue represents the sky, white represents the air, red symbolizes fire, green symbolizes water, and yellow symbolizes earth. All five colours together signify balance. Over time the colours will fade indicating the prayers have been successfully carried by the wind.
You don't have to be a Buddhist to hang prayer flags, however it is believed that whilst hanging them it is important to keep good, selfless motivations in mind, in keeping with the flags' ultimate purpose, which is spreading positivity. Keep in mind that it is considered disrespectful if the Buddhist prayer flags touch the ground. Try to hang them at a height, around the frame of the doorway or along a balcony are ideal.
